The region of Lake Como, Italy is to be found in the northern part of this country situated close to city of Milan. The lake itself measures 50km long and at the southern end it forks and situated between these is the beautiful town of Bellagio. However, this is not the largest of all the lakes in Italy and Lake Garda and Lake Maggiore are much bigger but it is one of the deepest.

For many centuries ever since the Roman Empire this like the other lakes situated around Italy has been a popular tourist resort. Today the towns that line its shores are not just popular with tourists but also cyclists, walkers and swimmers as well.

Actually getting to the area is not that difficult as it is actually situated on the country?s main railway network. There are trains which frequently leave from Milan to take visitors to Lake Como and the journey time is around 40 minutes. The trains leave Milan?s Central Station or the Porta Garibaldi Station and take visitors directly to the main station at Lake Como known as San Giovanni.

Once there you have a number of ways of getting around the lake, you can either drive, use local buses, or cycle if you wish. But the quickest way of getting from one of the main towns on Lake Como to the various resorts is using the steamers or boats. These boats and steamers offer a much more frequent service and connect all the main resorts of Bellagio, Varenna, Menaggio, Tremezzo, Lenno and Villa Carlotta to each other.

Commo town is one of the more lively towns situated at the southern end of the lake. It has plenty to offer in the way of beautiful gothic and renaissance architecture for you to enjoy. However, to really appreciate the lake then take a ride on the funicular which will once at the top provides you with some really spectacular views not just of the town but the lake also.

One of the more popular tourist destination points on Lake Commo is the town of Menaggio, which is located on its western shore. As well as a great range of hotels in which one can stay this town also has its own beach as well.

As mentioned at the southern end of the lake along with the town of Commo there is the town of Bellagio. This is a picture perfect Italian town and has some of the stateliest hotels in the whole area as well as beautiful gardens that are open to the public to enjoy.

Next we come to the town of Varenna this is a much more peaceful resort and one which is ideal for just relaxing and getting away from it all. Much smaller than the town of Bellagio but still offers beautiful architecture and you can if you want take time out to go to the Castello de Vezio and admire the views it offers over Lake Commo.

Ideally if you do intend to visit Lake Como, Italy try and arrange your time for staying during the week as at weekends the resorts become very busy as many people from Milan like to spend their free time around its shores. Also July and August should be avoided if at all possible as this is the height of the Italian holiday season and if you want to avoid the crowds you are better off visiting the area in either the spring or autumn. As well as being a lot quieter the resort accommodation prices are cheaper and yet you are still going to get great weather.
